Mobile marketing refers to the marketing on or with a mobile device, such as a smartphone. It can provide customers with time and location sensitive, personalized information that promotes goods, services, and ideas.

in other words, mobile marketing is a promotional activity designed for delivery to cell phones, smartphones, and other mobile, handheld devices, usually as a component of a multi-channel campaign.

Another form of mobile marketing is similar to advertising delivered over other electronic channels such as text, graphic and voice messages. SMS messaging is presently the most common and widely used delivery channel for mobile marketing followed by search engine marketing which is further followed by display-based campaigns.

The expanding capabilities of mobile devices also enable new types of interactive marketing. New mobile marketing channels include:

1. Location based service:

This marketing channel involves detecting the area the user is connecting from (geolocation) and sending marketing messages for businesses in that area.

2. Augmented reality mobile campaigns:

Augmented reality mobile campaigns overlay the user’s phone display with location-specific information about businesses and products.

3. 2D barcodes: 

Two-dimensional (2D) barcodes look like squares or rectangles that consist of many small, individual dots and scan vertically as well as horizontally to include much more information. A single 2D barcode can hold a significant amount of information and may remain legible even when etched onto a product. A mobile user can scan barcodes in the environment to access associated information.

4. GPS messaging: 

GPS (Global Positioning System) messaging is a wireless messaging system for location-specific. Using GPS messaging, the messages are sent and received by people with GPS locators within their wireless devices. Also, messages are linked to the location of the sender and accessed by any equipped mobile user entering that location. It is also referred to as mid-air messaging which involves location-specific messages that the user picks up when he comes into range.
