What does a mobile- friendly email design consist of?

The countless research and survey findings claims that responsive email design is the clear way to go. If you are engaged with your own email design, it’s essential to get a note of which elements are necessary to ensure it’s mobile friendly.

  • Your mobile readers shall be using their thumb or finger to tap, so make sure that your buttons, links and images are ‘tappable’ on mobile. Its important to consider the ideal mobile touchscreen target size.
  • Use a single column design, at most 2 columns. More than this will make accessing your site difficult for users.
  • Have your font size at least 13-14 pixels. Smaller fonts will make mobile users too zoom to read your text.
  • Use of navigation bars and menus should be avoided if possible. If required keep the number of links and images to a minimum.
  • Use a single, strong call to action. Give your readers the option by telling them precisely what to do. It would be a better deal to go for a big, bright CTA button, most probably near the beginning of your email.
  • Use images casually. Despite visual adding interest, having too many images can simply create havoc on download times.
  • Make your content short and sweet. Use headings and bullets to break up larger part of content as readers ‘on the go’ are more keen to read content that is to the point and short.

For your email, a responsive or mobile-friendly template is important. It is indeed the first step in meeting the needs of your mobile subscribers.
