Say Hello to India’s 13th fastest Supercomputer

A team of scientists led by Dilip Angom has managed to come up with the 13th fastest supercomputer of India. It has been named as Vikram-100 after one of the greatest Indian Scientists of all time, Dr. Vikram Sarabhai. He was the one who founded the Physical Research Laboratory at Ahmedabad in 1947. The latest Indian supercomputer was inaugurated on Friday at the same laboratory.

It remains to be seen that what will the all new Vikram-100 manage to accomplish but it certainly seems to be a great device. The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing in 1991 was able to successfully build PARAM 8000, India’s first supercomputer and since then, India has never looked back and it has continued to come up with better supercomputers.

Dilip Mangom, the man who successfully led a team of scientists to come up with this supercomputer has proudly stated, “Christened as VIKRAM-100, this supercomputer is the 13th fastest supercomputer in India and is more powerful than 200 desktop computers. This computer is also about 50 times more powerful than the one we had earlier. This supercomputer, with a very high computational capacity, can be used to solve advanced computational problems related to field of science.”

The cost of Vikram-100 is approximately Rupees 13 crore and it can easily be upgraded. The new supercomputer has a huge storage capacity and the usable space of a whopping 300 terabytes. Vikram-100 may not prove out to be as popular as the PARAM series of supercomputers but it is expected to make India proud.
