Blog syndication: Here’s all that you need to know

Syndication, in the case of a blog, means that the content is made available from one blog to other sites or blogs. Blog syndication, just like website syndication, involves a blog providing content to an arbitrary number of subscribing websites/ blogs that redistribute it. For the subscribing sites/ blogs, syndication is an effective way of adding greater depth and immediacy of information to their pages, making them more attractive to users. For the providing site/ blog, syndication increases exposure. This further generates new traffic for the providing site/ blog, making syndication an easy and relatively cheap, or even free, form of advertisement.

Blog syndication can be practiced in three different forms:

Licensed blog syndication:

In this case, bloggers are paid royalties when their content is accessed by end-users. Unlike free and ad-supported syndicators, licensed syndicators typically work with top content distributors and deliver content to closed systems such as corporate libraries. Therefore, licensed syndicators have a stringent approval process and do not accept all blogs for syndication. Bloggers also benefit from the exposure provided by this type of syndication, as it helps them to reach out to the audience they might not reach on their own. Newstex is the best example of a licensed blog syndicator.

Bartered blog syndication:

Bartered blog syndication is also referred to as free blog syndication. Since, bloggers receive no money when they syndicate their blog content through a bartered syndication service, hence the name. These sites simply provide an opportunity of republishing their posts or articles on them. Users post on these sites for no payment with the hope that the additional exposure can help boost traffic to their blogs thereby making their blogs more enticing to advertisers and other monetization opportunities.

Ad-supported syndication:

In ad-supported syndication, most bloggers do not earn money but they do benefit from increased exposure. BlogBurst is the best example of a blog syndicator that offers ad-supported syndication opportunities to top performing bloggers using a performance-based reward system.
